Indian Handicraft : Carpets

CarpetsCrafts are an integral part in the life of an Indian, despite the rapid social and technological changes that are taking place. In the Western world, special artists create craft objects and they are considered as luxury items. But in India like many other developing countries it is the main source of employment for a vast majority of the population, next to agriculture.

From the mountainous regions of the Ladakh through the Darjeeling in West Bengal and Sikkim to Manipur carpets began to reflect the flavour and tradition of its region. The most common motifs prevalent were of dragon, snow-lion and lotus. Few patterns also carried visuals from Buddhist iconography with dhawaja (flag), the kalash (water-vessel) and the twin fish being favourites. The designs and techniques bore quite a great influence of its regional abundance, essentially Central Asian tradition.

The Indian Hand-knotted carpet industry of Kashmir flourished in the moghul rule. Initially there was a great influence of the Persian designs, which the Kashmiri artisans soon succeeded in brushing off, developing a unique style based on the design patterns of their shawls, traditional paisley, leaves and flowersWool is the basic material used for preparation of carpets. But in Kashmir one can also find carpets made from silk. Sometimes silk and cotton combined with quality wool is also used for preparation of carpets.

Apart from Kashmir one can also find fine carpets in Amritsar (Punjab), Agra (Uttar Pradesh), Jaipur (Rajasthan) and Eluru and Warangal (Andhra Pradesh). The Mirzapur-Bhadohi belt in Uttar Pradesh represents the most important area of carpet weaving in the country as it has the largest concentration of carpet weavers.

Today the carpet scenario is witnessing a wide variety of transformations in respective of designs and techniques too. Many initiatives are being actioned to revive this art forms at both personal and government levels.
